Know-how

A working library of how T-Microcement is applied and how to live with it day to day. We add to this as questions come in.

Common questions

How long until I can walk on it?

Around 24 hours, at roughly 80% cure. Full hardness is reached at 30 days. We recommend going easy on it during the first month: no heavy furniture-dragging, no rugs that trap moisture.

Can it go over my existing tile / concrete / plywood?

In most cases, yes. That’s the point of the system. The primer handles adhesion. The substrate has to be sound (not crumbling, not moving, not damp), but you don’t need to demolish what’s there.

Wall mix or floor mix?

Two products, sold separately:

  • Wall mix. Smoother feel, no aggregate. For walls (indoor or covered outdoor), vanities, cabinetry, vertical surfaces; anything that doesn’t take foot traffic.
  • Floor mix. Sand-loaded, slightly rougher feel, much tougher. For floors and shower bases.

A bathroom with microcement walls and floor will need some of each.

How much do I need?

Coverage depends on substrate texture and trowel technique. As a rough starting estimate:

  • Base. ~3 m² per bucket. Wall mix is a 5 kg bucket, floor mix a 7 kg bucket.
  • Primer. ~12 m² per 1 L bottle.
  • Sealer. ~6 m² per 1 L bottle.

A worked example: a typical 10 m² bathroom with 3 m² of wall and 7 m² of floor surface would need roughly:

  • 3 buckets of floor mix (7 m² ÷ 3, rounded up)
  • 1 bucket of wall mix (3 m² ÷ 3)
  • 1 bottle of primer (10 m² ÷ 12, rounded up)
  • 2 bottles of sealer (10 m² ÷ 6, rounded up)

Rough surfaces drink more material than smooth ones. If you’re not sure, send us your numbers and we’ll suggest a starting order.

Can it crack?

The polymer modification gives it some flex, so normal building movement is fine. What it can’t do is hide a substrate that’s actively moving or expanding. Site prep is half the job.

What colours can I get?

Two stock colours: pearl and silver. Both are shown across the gallery. We don’t do custom mixes. A new colour palette is in development. If you have a question about how either reads in a particular space or alongside a specific material, ask us and we’ll send extra photos.

Is it really waterproof in bathrooms?

Yes, with the sealer applied correctly. Skipping the sealer or rushing the cure time defeats the purpose.

The sealer is breathable on purpose, so it’s not fully stain-proof. For counters or tables, plan on a two-part epoxy topcoat over our sealer.

Can I apply it myself?

Yes, but it’s not a brush-it-on product. The look comes from trowel technique, and bad trowel work shows. We send written application guidance with every order, and we strongly recommend doing a sample piece (an offcut board, a hidden patch) before committing to the visible surface.

For complex jobs (curved walls, large open floors, anywhere a mistake will be hard to walk back), hiring an experienced plasterer is the right call. We’re happy to talk through your project before you order.

What if I damage it?

This is one of the things our system does much better than typical microcements. It’s repair-friendly:

  • Stain or surface mark → sandpaper it out, apply a thin re-seal.
  • Scratch or chip → trowel a thin layer over the area, blend the edges, re-seal. The new layer bonds chemically to the old.
  • Whole-room refresh after a few years → light sand, re-seal, looks new.

A small leftover bucket and a sanding sponge keep your surfaces looking right for the long haul. Hold onto a bit from every order.

How long does a project take?

Application is usually 3–5 days of on-site work for an average room, spread across primer, two coats of base, and sealer. Add the 24-hour walk-on cure and the 30-day full-cure window before heavy use, and you’re looking at roughly a week before everyday use and a month before the surface is at full hardness.
